Cattle

Traceable from birth

Cattle in Uruguay are individually identified with an official visual ear tag and an RFID device, registered in the national system run by the Ministry of Livestock (MGAP / SNIG). Individual identification became mandatory for calves born from September 2006, and the whole national herd has been individually identified since 2011.

  • Individual ID

Visual tag plus RFID device per animal, registered in the national Animal Registry.

  • Movement records

Movements of identified cattle must be reported to the Animal Registry, alongside DICOSE ownership and transit guides; each animal’s ID is read on entry to slaughter.

  • Documents on request

Sanitary certificates and registry extracts are shared with counterparties.
